They're a good breed the Oman women. Young Hannah who works with us is the queen of cupcakes. She's been baking for us for wedding celebrations, births and birthdays! Even catering to our bizarre dietary requirements - see dairy free dark chocolate and raspberry cakes above. Cheryl baked us homemade coconut bread this week and Kathleen helped us select our new red studio chairs. Thanks Oman ladies - we love you!

Happy Earth Day! Here at Polli we’re celebrating Mother Earth by doing our best to preserve it. It’s the little things you do that make a difference – like preparing a communal lunch to save on packaging or catching public transport to work. We’re lucky enough to have the talented Sherri Hilario cooking our lunch each day. Sherri has started a herb garden here at the Polli studio, she buys our food at the local co op and even carries our compost waste home... on the bus!

Polli aims to be a carbon neutral company which is socially responsible, reducing our environmental foot print wherever possible. Check out our progress on the Polli website.

The talented Nicky Law and Julia Lee (soon to be Skinner) have been cooking up some beautiful screen printed tea towels. All designed and made locally they have a beautiful hand crafted feeling. Hable Construction

While in the states recently we met Susan of Hable Construction. We feel in love instantly with her Texan accent and soon learnt of her beautiful work. The sisters, Susan and Katherine, named their business after their family construction company. It fits perfectly as the collection of personal and home accessories (designed and made in the US) are so well made and considered - they're built to last! The bold, graphic style of the prints come to life with vibrant colours on thick canvas.

New Collection Launched - Sydney

Polli's new collection was launched at the Life in Style trade show over the weekend. We got a great response to our new designs, colours and hand woven pieces (stitched by the Polli mum's). The new pieces will be available online or at a Polli stockist near you soon!

The new 'Tandem' necklace design - a bicycle built for two - was very popular, complete with a bottle of vino and a baguette in the front basket and Duffy the dog along for the ride in the back!

Polli is also the proud Australia distributor of Tivi, exhibiting their range of clutches, rings, cuffs and belts for the first time. The Hips clutch generated a lot of interest.

The trade show also saw great new colletions from our favourites Mushu and High Tea with Mrs Woo, as well as many others.

Julia Rothman - Brooklyn

When we were in NY we were very lucky to meet Julia where she hand delivered a print which had been lost in the post for 5 months. It’s a well travelled print USA to Australia twice. Tuesday Designs

We have fallen in love with the beautiful work of Taryn and Elise at Tuesday Designs. Their works on paper use embossing to create detailed 'white on white' imagery which sets the scene for their vintage fabric characters. The vibrant colour of the fabric stands out against the subtle white background as if a spotlight is bringing one section to life. The texture of the fabric and paper is so tactile you'll be pawing at your screen!

I was the happy recipient of these gorgeous pillowcases from Third Drawer Down this Christmas. The beautiful illustrated image is by Dylan Martorell of Melbourne. The mythological scene extends over the two pillow cases making them a perfect pair and makes for creative dreams.

Fins, Kingscliff

It's not often that we write about food but we couldn't resist reviewing Fins at Salt Village. Up in Kingscliff of Northern NSW you'll find this small but impressive restaurant. You can enjoy a decadent degustation or just posh take away fish and chips to eat on the nearby beach. We did both in the one day and this vegetarian was even turned to soft shell crab (below)...

The fish is line caught locally and the chef, Steven Snow, uses organic produce where possible. The wine menu boasts local and portugese wines, some organic and biodynamic!

Well deserving of its chef's hats accolades, top notch!

Bloody Beautiful Bangalow

Just a few kilometres further south we found Bangalow. The main street - Byron Street - was home to so many beautiful stores and window displays! The Little Booktree book shop with its Babar hot air balloon display and even the local Pharmacy had a beautiful window display of perfume and Missoni beach towels!Island Luxe (above) had a beautiful range of fashion and homewares in neutral colour ways. We especially liked the ceramic vessels (below), these native inspired pieces can be used as a vase or just a sculpture to admire.

Further up the street we came past Wax Jambu (below) with its beautiful striped deck chairs.

Obsession (below) with a great range of summer shoes including the latest Campers.

Aurora (below); "a store full of sustainable products has been able to flourish with emerging environmental consciousness of designers, suppliers, and most importantly, customers."

The precious Little Peach (below) with a beautiful range of Japanese collectables and embossed prints from Tuesday Designs . We've contact the girls from Tuesday Designs and hope to do a posting on their work soon...

And finally Heart of the Home (below) with a great range of Summer 'Sunny' products for the beach and home.

Beautiful Byron

While on the road we ducked down to Northern NSW and drove through the beautiful Byron Bay (and past the BIGGEST Avocado!).

Here we popped in on a Polli stockist Pure Byron (below), they've got every conceivable salt scrub available - no excuse for not exfoliating! - plus new printed eco bags from envirosax. We also checked out Greenhouse around on Fletcher Street who have a great range of giftware, jewellery and homewares.

The beautifully detailed and botanically inspired work of David Knott has been admired by Polli for several years now. The Lotus light (above) has a 'combination of traditional ornamentation with modern materials and processes...what some would term Technoramanticism'.

These designs, such as the new Dracaena light above, are so adaptable they are equally at home in a large commercial installation or hanging over a residential dining room table for an intimate meal. What's Knott to love?

We're sitting much straighter at Polli after investing in a couple of Logitech's new X shaped monitor stands. Not only are they really really good looking but they are practical too. The Danks Street Festival was buzzing today as was the first Designers Market at Pyd (Cnr Young and Phillip St, Waterloo). Their car park was transformed into a bustling showcase of local design; wall art (stretched fabric, vinyl graphics, lino prints), fashion (jewellery, accessories and mini-me-style liberty print kids clothes) and furniture (vintage and Zaishu seats below).

We got out and about on Friday for some inspiration for the new range. We visited the Art Gallery of NSW and checked out the new Monet and the Impressionists exhibition, well worth a visit.

Sculpture by the sea

Sculpture by the sea is currently on along the Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk from 16 October - 2 November. This is a free event with over 100 sculptures from around the world to capture the imagination of all ages. We went to check it out on Saturday, the sun was shining and the people were out. Below are a few of the high lights.

Interactive fun for the kids in this whale come helicopter.

This pair of mechanical wings move with beautiful balance, you could watch them for hours.

You have to keep close eye on the surroundings as some of the most beautiful sculptures become part of the environment.

This Tree/Boat is stunning, it sits in the perfect position on the point looking out to sea.

The concept that started in Bondi in 1997 has now spread to Cottesloe Beach in Perth (5-24 March 2009) and Aarhus in Denmark (2-28 June 2009) check out Sculptures by the Sea for more info.

If you were watching the ABC on Tuesday night you would have caught Risking Our Kids, a fantastic documentary by Judy Rymer and Bevan Childs. The doco focuses on Professor Fiona Stanley's fight for the next generations health and wellbeing. If you looked really closely you might have also seen the inspiring Prof. Stanley wearing Polli Stream earrings!

When in Rome recently we stumbled across Mia (Via Panisperna, 225). You can drink, eat sushi and shop for a gorgeous range of homewares and gifts.

When in Rome...

Stay near Campo d’ Fiori, it’s got a great fresh produce market in the mornings where you can collect fruit, veggies, cheese and meats for breakfast. The square is also home to the bakery Il Forno di Campo de' Fiori which sells a delicious range of fresh bread and pizza slices. Try the tomato and garlic – simple but the best. Wonder up to Piazza Navona.

You can get lost in the little lanes filled with a great range of independent stores including the gorgeous MAM boutique (Via Delle Coppelle, 73A).

Lunch at Cul de Sac (Piazza Pasquino, just near Piazza Navona), a tiny local wine bar with an endless selection of cheese and wine!

Stroll up to Villa Borghese, you can walk through the beautiful gardens or hire a number of bikes, go carts or ‘assisted’ four wheel bikes. I say assisted tentatively as the motors don’t necessarily work up hill!

Sample the gelato at any number of stores like Giolitti (Via Uffici del Vicario, 40) a huge selection and generous serves if you have the patience to wait your turn; or Il Gelato San Crispino (Via della Panetteria, 42) which is famous for not using any preservatives, they have a great selection of creamy rich meringue filled flavours and unusual fruit sorbets like plum and fig.

Drink at Palatium near the Spanish Steps (Via Frattina, 94); a great selection of wines, you can fill up a plate with marinated olives from the bar to sample while you drink. The bar showcases products from Lazio which you can sample there or take away. Unusually modern interior for Rome, you’ll need to book if you want to stay for dinner.

Splurge on a night at Villa Laetitia and admire the beautiful original fashion sketches and interiors.

Carry a good map or a phone with Google maps! Most fold out maps omit the smaller and best streets.

Wear sensible shoes, those cobble stone streets will kill your feet!

At Lavish we caught but with the lovely Nicky and cooed at the beautiful baby clothes and toys... Just walking in the door makes you clucky! Elizabeth as a great eye and the store is set up with little stories of colour with vintage furniture complementing the ranges throughout the store.

Zinc Details - San Francisco

Zinc Details has two great stores in San Fran - 1905 Fillmore and 2410 California. The store is like a kaleidoscope of colour and products. We love Marimekko selection and even went back for a second look – you get spend days in Zinc!

Doe - San Francisco

While in San Fransico last week we popped in on Doe (629A Haight Street). Not only do they have the cutest toadstool window display they've got a great range of clothes, kids, cards and little artworks. Their online store makes their great collection accessible for all.

Pillow Pillow Pillow - San Fran

In New York we also came across Pillow Pillow Pillow - they do THE cutest range of dog illustrated totes and pillows. One of the more popular designs is the 'weener dog'. They even have a casting call link on their site for new doggy talent - as yet they don't feature a Kelpie so Alfie might be in luck!

Pool Trade Show

Polli was well received at the Pool Trade Show, Las Vegas. As designers this was our first time at a fashion show and were surprised by the creativity on the floor both with the booths and the venue – nonstop music, live t-shirt screen printing and free tattoos (of the permanent kind!).

Gimme Coffee NY

After spending 8 nights in NY without any luck in the coffee department on our last day we found Gimme Coffee, this is the best coffee we have sampled in NY. The cup was the right size (small) the milk was textured and the temperature perfect for drinking. Go to 228 Mott St.

NYC Summer Streets

During August New York City has closed it's main streets to cars on Saturday mornings. Opening them to walkers, cyclist, roller bladers, skate boarders... even yoga on the medium strips! This was a great opportunity to explore Manhattan so we got up early and jumped on some bikes. We rode the round trip from SOHO to Central Park.

On our way we met some interesting characters and got some serious bike envy.

NY Gift Fair

Melbourne Visit

While in Melbourne we got the chance to visit some of the Polli stockists.

One of the stores was Arbor Redux Sparta Place, Sydney Rd Brunswick. This is a cute little jewellery store with a difference. Gretta has a natural eye for unique products. She has fitted out her store with recycled window frames for display cabinets and fantastic old school counters.

We also went to visit Tanya and Jacqulin at Belki, 631 Rathdowne Street, Carlton North. We were very impressed with the bags (Tess bought 2) and the hand cream. Belki is a stunning store with lots of interesting products, it's well worth a visit.

Hobart pop in

While on a trip down to Tassie I dropped into some Polli stockist. It was great to see the beautiful stores and the great products they stock! It was hard not to shop at every stop!
Inside on Murray St has a wide range of textiles, ceramics and jewellery. All the products are put together with a well styled eye. This is a real gem in Hobart.

Inside has a great kids section. So much fun!

Roses Cupboard on Macquarie Street South Hobart, has a lovely homely feel, with lots of jewellery, ceramics, shoes + a great view of Mt Wellington (above)

Hobart has a lot to do a see... well worth a visit.

New Studio

Starkey's Ginger Beer

Ingredients:
6 L water
1.5 tsp yeast
1.3 tsp tartaric acid
500 grams white sugar
1.3 tsp cream of tartar
1.5 tbs ground ginger (or 4cm fresh grated ginger)
1 x egg white and Shell of one egg (crazy but true)

You will also need: 1 x Large very clean bucket or very large pot (to hold over 6L); 1 x Strainer; 11 x 600mL bottles or 5 x 1.25L bottles. Wash and reuse bottles that were from carbonated drinks (bottle made for non-carbonated drinks will not work)

Mix all ingredients in a bucket, let stand for 3 hours, strain and bottle,
leave for 3-5 days or until you can’t squeeze the bottles (this means there are enough bubbles), place in fridge, chill and pour into a glass, garnish with mint (optional) and drink.

It's quite a quirky hotel; our room included a green fibreglass bathroom...
